Over 200 kites were distributed by government to children from the villages of Beterverwagting (BV) and Agricola earlier this week.
The distribution, which is part of the administration’s annual exercise, was executed by Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who encouraged the children to participate fully in the celebration of Easter.
The kites were distributed at the Ministry of the Presidency’s Press Room, the Donald Allison Boxing Gym in Agricola, East Bank Demerara and the New Testament Church of God in BV.
Harmon, in his address to the children before one of the distribution activities, said that the exercise is one started by President David Granger upon his assumption to office in 2015. However, he said, since President Granger is still in Cuba, where he has been undergoing medical treatment, he asked that the kites be distributed on his behalf.
“We are honouring you, our young people…These kites have been provided by His Excellency, President David Granger. He has asked me to say to you that he is in Cuba and cannot be here, but this exercise must go on. He holds our children dear to his heart and when we celebrate Easter, we are celebrating one of the most important events in the history of Christianity. This Government cares for you, the children of Guyana and we will continue to work to ensure that you are not only provided with opportunities, but that we can build a better Guyana for you to inherit,” Harmon said.
The minister also urged parents to be alert and to ensure that the kites are flown in wide, open and safe spaces.
Harmon was accompanied by Mr. Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen, the Guyanese World Boxing Association’s Super Middleweight Gold Championship at the Agricola kite distribution exercise.
