The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has denied non-intervention in the dry weather being experienced by Residents of Region Nine.
According to GWI, contrary to statements being made in some sections of the media, it has recognised the dry weather pattern and made significant efforts to alleviate the effects by drilling several wells in the region.
These include wells in the areas of Aishalton, Annai, Karasabai, Aranaputa, Nappi, Hiawa, St. Ignatius and Sand Creek. The latter is an initiative of GWI, the Regional Democratic Council and the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO).
Further, GWI has requested a supplemental budget to drill new wells in other communities in 2019.
With regard to the communities of Katoka and Katoonarib, an engineering assessment will be made on the 23rd and 24th April, 2019, respectively, and this will provide for both immediate relief and long term solutions.
Last year, the Government of Guyana partnered with the Brazilian Army to drill eight wells in the communities of Baishaidrun, Achawib, Karaudarnau, Aishalton, Chukrikednau, Awaruwaunau, Maruranau and Shea. Residents of those communities now have access to potable water following the installation of distribution networks by GWI in collaboration with community members.
Regional Executive Officer of Region Nine Carl Parker has noted that while the dry season has been harsh, significant strides have been made by the Government to alleviate the dry condition by drilling of wells and installation of pertinent infrastructure.
GWI has thus far for 2019 visited some 33 villages in Region Nine and intends to visit all 57, as a part of its efforts to ensure equitable access to potable water on the coast and in the hinterland.
