After being destroyed by a fire in 2017 which was reportedly orchestrated by inmates in a bid to escape their confinement, plans have finally been set in motion for the reconstruction of the Camp Street, Georgetown Prison.
As part of the process, the Ministry of Public Security has invited sealed bids from eligible and qualified persons for the ‘Reconstruction of the Camp Street Prison – Construction of Prison Building – Lots 1-3’. Bidding for this project, this publication understands, will be conducted through the National Competitive Bidding (NCB) procedures specified in the Procurement Act of 2003 and is opened to all bidders subject to provisions of Section III (Eligible Countries) of the Bid Document.
Interested bidders many inspect the bidding document(s) and obtain further information from the Finance Department, Ministry of Public Security situated at Lot 6 Brickdam, Stabroek, Georgetown. All bids, according to information released by the Ministry must be submitted to the Chairman of the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board, Ministry of Finance.
In dramatic fashion news broke of what was initially described as chaos at Camp Street Prison back in July of 2017. This was subsequently complemented by reports of a fire which was soon after followed by claims of prison guards being shot and a few prisoners were able to escape after hijacking a car. A number of prisoners were also hospitalised during the ordeal.
It is expected that once reconstructed the prison will possess enhanced security measures to prevent future escape attempts.
