A man who was shot by police after he reportedly attempted to escape from custody was this afternoon remanded to prison after being slapped with five charges.
Seon Lampkin, 27, of ‘D’ Field, Sophia, made an appearance before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The first charge against Lampkin stated that, on April 16, 2019 at Main Street, Georgetown, he robbed Jonay DeSantos of a $5,000 handbag with $8,000 worth of valuables inside. It was further alleged that, on the same day and at the same location, Lampkin attempted to rob Uris Alleyne.
The third charge alleged that, on the same day at High Street, Georgetown, Lampkin, while being in police custody for robbery and attempt to commit a felony, escaped from custody.
It was further alleged that Lampkin assaulted police officers Wilson and Keron on April 16, 2019, at High Street, who were acting in the execution of their duties. He was issued with a charge for each officer he allegedly assaulted.
Lampkin, who was unrepresented, denied all the allegations after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that, on the day in question, Lampkin robbed the two nurses and was trying to make good his escape. However, he was apprehended by public-spirited persons and handed over to the police in the vicinity of Main Street, Georgetown.
The court heard that, while Lampkin was being escorted into the police van, he attempted to disarm the two police officers and make an escape. One of the officers, while defending himself, shot Lampkin to the abdomen.
Lampkin was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was treated and later charged for the offence.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Lampkin to prison and instructed him to make his next court appearance on May 15, 2019.
