A 21-year-old man died around 04:00 hrs this morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), hours after he and two other persons were involved in an accident at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The accident happened around 01:00 hrs this morning.
The deceased has been identified as Vickram Ramraj of Lot 85 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. The driver and a female (no names provided as yet) are currently receiving treatment from the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the driver told police ranks that he lost control while negotiating a turn at La Jalousie. He along with the deceased and the female were said to be under the influence of alcohol.
According to information received, the trio had just left a bar at Tuschen and they were on their way to Vreed-en Hoop when the accident happened.
The deceased’s father, Ronald Ramraj said that he last saw his son yesterday morning around 05:00 hrs. “I was leaving home to go to work and he was sleeping. Since then, I didn’t see him back until the accident.”
The older Ramraj explained that around 01:30 hrs this morning, he was sleeping when he received a call that his son was involved in an accident. “We went to the scene but only the vehicle was there. My son was already at the hospital.”
He explained that when he got to the medical facility, he saw his son lying unconscious on a bed. The female was also unconscious while the driver suffered minor injuries.
“My son was groaning all the time and they took him in the ambulance to Georgetown and just after he reached, they hooked him up to a life machine and then he died shortly after,” the grieving father explained.
There are reports that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident and could not have managed the vehicle as he was negotiating the turn. An investigation has been launched.
