A West Bank Demerara man who admitted he was drunk while driving but denied that he caused the death of a mother of three was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $500,000 and fined $7,500 for driving under the influence.
The man, Omdatt Persaud, 30, of L’Oratoire, Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court where he denied that, on April 21, at Canal No. One Public Road, West Bank Demerara, he drove motor lorry GPP 4022 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Angelle Barry.
He, however, admitted to driving the vehicle while he was under the influence of alcohol and was fined $7,500.
According to information, Barry, her reputed husband, and their children were heading for an afternoon stroll when she was allegedly struck down by the truck driver while he attempted to overtake a truck that was in front of him. The woman’s reputed husband and children also sustained injuries.
They were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were treated and sent away; Barry died while receiving treatment. Police in a statement said, that at the time of his arrest, Persaud was tested and found to be over the prescribed alcohol limit.
Persaud is scheduled to make his next court appearance early next month.
