Two men who were busted by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks with over 237 pounds of cocaine hidden in pepper sauce were today charged and remanded for the offence.

The men, Ramaeo Chandrabhan, 43, of 39 Oronoque Street, Queenstown, and Andrew Yong, 30, of Section ‘C’ Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The charge against the men stated that, on April 26, 2019, at Camex Cargo Shed, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, they trafficked 107.6 kilograms (237 lbs) of cocaine.

Both men denied the charge after it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

CANU Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford, opposed to the granting of bail to the defendants, citing the weight of the evidence of Yong’s confession statement while in custody.

She added that CANU is in possession of a telephone recording between Yong and Chandrabhan where they boasted about CANU and the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) inability to detect cocaine in pepper sauce.

The court also heard that Yong was the one who identified the bottles of peppers containing the cocaine.

On those grounds, the Prosecutor asked that bail be refused and that the men be remanded to prison.

The Magistrate upheld the prosecution’s objection, and remanded both men to prison.

They were instructed to make their next court appearance on May 15 for report.
