Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, yesterday told the media that the APNU+AFC Government is looking to revamp the entire structure for housing, “down to the personnel”.
Harmon said this as he hosted post-Cabinet press briefing.
The Director-General was asked about the interventions that have been made on behalf of the hundreds of youths who attended government outreaches across the country in hope of solutions to the woes they face trying to access housing.
He responded saying that government is conscious of the need for housing solutions in Guyana.
The former minister said that interventions were made at the outreaches where several titles were given to persons who were waiting for many years.
Further, Harmon told the media that the outreaches provided perfect opportunities for ministers to understand some of the many problems being faced by citizens who are trying to access housing.
He said, “We heard some horror stories.”
The Director General did not go into details about some of the “horror stories” but said that efforts will be afoot to correct the wrongs going back to even before the time of the APNU+AFC Government.
He said that measures have already been taken.
For instance, President David Granger, “in his wisdom” made the decision to reassign the Minister who had responsibility for housing, Valerie Yearwood. She is now at the Ministry of Agriculture, having responsibility for rural affairs. Former Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, has taken up the mantle over at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
Harmon said that government will also remove other workers over at CH&PA, “because titles have been misplaced and so on.”
Further, the Director-General said that the government will soon come up with new ideas to contribute to the fulfillment of the overall vision to provide communities.
