A former Guyana Police Force (GPF) member, who is wanted by the United States Government in relation to trafficking narcotics through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, was today arraigned before a magistrate and remanded to prison pending his extradition hearing.
On February 2nd, 2017, police issued a wanted bulletin for Shawn Neblett in connection with trafficking in narcotics through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
Late this afternoon, Neblett arrived at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was placed before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.
In the courtroom, Attorney-at-law, Stacy Goodings, who is representing the Government of United States, told the court that Neblett had been evading the police but was arrested eight days ago at Moleson Creek, Berbice, while illegally attempting to cross over to Suriname.
She added that she is in possession of an indictment and an arrest warrant which was issued by the Government of United States for his arrest in connection to trafficking narcotics.
She added that, based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), she asked the court to remand Neblett to prison until the hearing and completion of the extradition proceeding.
A visibly upset Neblett, upon hearing the lawyer’s request, said, “Is eight days I’m in lock-up and I was going across to Suriname legally. Is only when them police arrested me they told me that I’m on the block list. I was never aware of anything.”
The Magistrate, after listening to both sides, remained Neblett to prison until June 6, 2019.
